52 in 362 / DIY art journal project

back in my extremely traumatizing super fun high school years, i had several artistic friends who had these magical books called art journals. i was completely overwhelmed by page after page of creative yet personal expression. us [undiscovered] non-creatives aspired to having a page created for us in those books. i wanted to have my own art journal so badly my heart physically hurt a titch, and i had absolutely no faith i could pull off something that inspiring.

i didn't give it a go until about a year ago, at which time i was given a lot of direction. to my utter disbelief this resulted in a book that fascinated me as much as any i've seen before.

i am starting a new book because i'm starting a new chapter in my life (pun intended- permission to roll your eyes granted) and i thought it would be really cool to do it with other people.

here's the plan:

once a week on every wednesday i'll post a prompt such as a quote, theme, writing prompt around which to create a page. the result will be a book filled with ideas, themes, struggles, personal history, hopes, dreams, fears, questions, artistic exploration, pains and joys that come straight from your soul and mine. you are ABSOLUTELY NOT limited to doing one page a week, or obligated to if you join. this is just a resource and a community- hopefully it isn't just me posting there! ;)

i'll also post tips about where to get really cool materials, i'll share my own pages and discuss them, and i'll take any suggestions for the prompt of the week if you have ideas!

join the flickr group (link on left sidebar) you can join to upload pictures of your journal pages and comment on other member's photos. discussion is encouraged, say as much or as little about your page, what mediums you used, what it means to you, what it's all about, ect.

and don't forget the MOST IMPORTANT thing: DO. NOT. dismiss. this invitation with the excuse that you "aren't creative and/or artistic AND/OR don't have time"- this is BULL S*** my friend, and if you're thinking it right now that's a flag you definitely need to give this a go because you're in denial and it's not coming out anywhere else (which is wants to)- everyone NEEDS to express and create, and this is not about making something to hang on the wall or sell in a gallery, it's about connecting with your Self and discovering your inner artist. when i say artist what i mean is the side of you that is sorely neglected, namely your expressive creator Self (notice i didn't say creative). see quote below (ironically this is the first page of my book).

magic and beauty in art is found in expressing your truth, plus it's a totally therapeutic outlet (which is a TOTAL BONUS that we all desperately need, whether we admit it or not).
